OMEA Publications Guidelines for Authors

OMEA--The Oregon Music Educators Association established its publications program to expand and enhance the knowledge of its membership and to advance the cause of music education. OMEA encourages the submission of manuscripts on all phases of music education in schools and communities, including professional philosophy and practical instructional techniques (but not method books), the arts and arts education as a whole, and current issues in music teaching and learning. Abstracts and manuscripts of books, booklets, brochures, papers, and media resources (such as audiocassettes and videocassettes) are reviewed by the publications committee.

OMEA copyrights its publications for the protection of its authors. Portions of the publications may not be reproduced or reprinted without permission from OMEA.

Royalties are not paid for published contributions except under specific circumstances as determined by the Editor and approved by the Boards Executive Committee. All authors receive copies of their publications, and they may order additional copies at a reduced rate.

Submission of manuscripts

Before writing manuscripts, authors should send an outline or a table of contents and a sample chapter to OMEA's Editor of publications. This will enable the publications committee to determine whether the proposed work is appropriate for OMEA's current publication needs. If the outline is approved, OMEA will request that the author send the entire manuscript. OMEA does not consider simultaneous submissions (that is, manuscripts that are being considered at the same time by another publisher). Acceptance of an outline does not guarantee manuscript acceptance.

The Editor will acknowledge receipt of every manuscript. After the editor and the publications committee (or other authorities for highly specialized topics) have carefully reviewed each manuscript or out-line, those that do not meet current publication needs will be returned to the author as soon as possible.

Preparation of manuscripts

All material, whether typewritten or printed by computer, must be double-spaced on 8-1/2" x 11" bond paper. Readable computer printouts are acceptable, and OMEA would appreciate receiving computer disks (IBM or Macintosh format) along with a hard copy of the text. Since the publications staff uses Appleworks 5.0.3 for Mac, that is the preferred format, but most other disks can be translated by the staff. All disks should be marked clearly with the author's name, title of the manuscript, disk format (PC or Mac), and the name and version of the software used. The manuscript (or abstract) may also be delivered via email as a cut and paste document.

It is the author's responsibility to cite all material from other sources; liability for failure to cite published sources lies with the author. Citations must include name of author and publication, city and state of publication, publisher, volume, number, and issue (if applicable), and pages cited. Omission of this information will delay publication. To use previously published music or long quotations in the text, permission must be secured from the publisher. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission and send a copy of the written permission to OMEA. The author should copyright original music before publication. OMEA adheres strictly to the U.S. Copyright Law and carefully guards against any infringement of this law.

Photographs from authors that complement the content are always welcomed. Black-and-white glossy photos are required or uploaded jpegs may substitute. All photos become the property of OMEA. Graphics are the responsibility of the author and will be included if submitted to OMEA as camera-ready art produced by a graphic artist and sized no larger than 8-1/2" x 11". Sketches or other unacceptable art will not be used.

Editing and production

Once a manuscript (not just an outline) is accepted for publication, the editor enters it in the publications schedule. Depending on the length and complexity of the manuscript, the time limitations of OMEA staff, and the current work load, the manuscript may be published in three to eight months. OMEA staff members edit manuscripts to conform with recognized principles of English usage and guidelines of The Chicago Manual of Style (14th ed.), which is published by The University of Chicago Press. The editor also makes changes that have been requested by the publications committee or returns the manuscript to the author if the changes requested are extensive. These revisions may involve condensing the manuscript, rearranging the parts for improved sequence, adding stronger passages, sharpening the focus, or retitling the work. The editor will make every effort to ensure that researched material and facts are correct, but the author has final responsibility for accuracy. All design decisions regarding format, font, presentation, artwork, color, and photographs remain with the OMEA staff.
