MENC and Hershey Foods, Inc. Create the Hershey's All-USA High School Band
National Program to Acknowledge Outstanding High School-Age Musicians
RESTON, VA (October 1, 2003) - MENC: The National Association for Music Education has partnered with Hershey Foods, Inc. to create the Hershey's All-USA High School Band, a national program that acknowledges the outstanding skills and accomplishments of high school-age musicians. High school musicians are asked to balance commitments to family, academics, community, and their personal life. In addition, they are required to maintain high skill levels requiring immense amounts of time and devotion to their instrument. To honor these accomplished students, teachers, administrators, or private instructors can nominate a student for membership in the Hershey's All-USA High School Band.
"This exciting new program comes at a time when music education is recognized as a vital link to the success of our nation's students," said John J. Mahlmann, executive director of MENC. "Our pride in the achievements of high school musicians is shared by our partners at Hershey's Fund Raising, and the Hershey's All-USA High School Band is an outstanding example of our shared commitment to celebrating the way that music in our schools makes a difference in the lives of young people."
According to Curt Robinson, marketing manager for Hershey's Foods, "The Hershey's All-USA High School Band program honors the best of the best in high school music. These outstanding students will receive the recognition they deserve for achieving excellence in music and other aspects of their high school career. MENC has a solid reputation in developing and executing quality programs that build a stronger awareness of the importance of supporting music in our schools."
The kick-off for the All-USA High School Band program is scheduled for this fall. Nominations will be due in March 2004, with the winners announced in fall 2004. All-USA Band members will be featured in a national promotion recognizing their commitment to excellence. A special Web site, http://www.hersheysfundraising.com/ offers more details.
