Opportunity to Study With the National Symphony Orchestra Announced

The Oregon Alliance for Arts Education is delighted to announce that we will once again invite Oregon music students to audition for an absolutely stunning opportunity a four week summer music program with the National Symphony Orchestra!

The Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute is designed for serious instrumentalists in grades 9 through 12 and college students through the sophomore year as of September 2004. The fellowship provides the following benefits to students accepted into the program:

* Round-trip air transportation to and from Washington, DC
* Housing, meals and local transportation during the stay in the nation's capital
* Private lessons taught by a member of the National Symphony Orchestra
* Chamber music coaching by NSO musicians
* Master classes and seminars
* Attendance at selected rehearsals and performances of the NSO
* Participation in the NSO Summer Music Institute Orchestra
* Performance opportunities in DC metropolitan area
* Exposure to internationally renowned conductors, soloists and musicians

The dates of the Institute are July 1 through July 26. 2004. National Trustees' fellowships may be awarded to students who play any of the following: violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, harp, timpani, percussion. The following are ineligible: guitar, saxophone, tuba and piano.

The program is open by taped audition to students who are seriously considering orchestra music as a career and are willing to devote themselves to this opportunity to meet and make music with peers from across the United States, and to learn from among the nation's most accomplished orchestral players.

Audition tapes will be reviewed by a panel appointed by the Oregon Alliance for Arts Education. Selected nominees' tapes will be forwarded to the Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra for final selection.

The deadline is February 27, 2004 for receipt of the application and audition tape by the Oregon Alliance.
