South Baker Elementary School Wins $10,000 from Oscar Mayer

South Baker Elementary School!

How, why, and when we applied to Oscar Mayer
I received the mailing from Oscar Mayer in January, looked at it, thought it
was interesting, and set it aside on my desk for about two weeks because I
was in the middle of rehearsals for my 3rd grade program and planning for the
WLC. When I finally decided that it was going to come off my desk one way or
the other, I entered South Baker Elementary School in the competition.
The contest rules stated that there was a limit of one entry per envelope,
but not one per school so I entered my K, 1, 2, and 3, each with different
variations on the "Bologna Song" and just singing the "Wiener Jingle."
Grades 1-3 sang, had choreography, and played instruments (2nd Grade did sign
language and 3rd Grade used Boom Whackers). Kindergarten won�they were just
singing and acting like Kindergartners.

Dear Judy:
On behalf of everyone here at MENC, I would like to take this opportunity to
congratulate you and your students at South Baker Elementary School for
winning the Oregon Oscar Mayer� School House Jam� Talent Search. The
creativity and enthusiasm you showed in your performances is a credit to the
students and faculty of the music department at South Baker Elementary. You
should be very proud of your efforts. Keep up the good work!
It is most comforting to hear about students and their teachers working so
well together. Your entry in this contest is a marvelous example of the kind
of partnership that we here at MENC work hard to create, so that school music
programs around the country will have enough instruments and other necessary
equipment for their students. Oscar Mayer® has been very generous in not
only giving money to the winners of the School House Jam™ all over the
country, but also in their donation to MENC's Century Club, which will
further benefit other teachers and their music programs in the years to come.
Thank you again for participating in the Oscar Mayer® School House Jam™ and I
hope you all have a wonderful summer!

The Wienermobile arrived on May 21. The $10,000 arrived the previous week.
Our first purchase was a new Boston piano to replace our 50-year-old Everett.
Dunkley Music of Boise also gave us the use of a $5,000 Technics digital
piano with the deal. Because my school has no computer lab, the second large
purchase was a laptop computer, midi keyboard, and software (Band in a Box,
Music Ace I and II, Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory, Midi Saurus, and
Sibelius to name some of it). There is enough left for an 18x18 square foot
carpet with an inlaid music staff for the students to actually be the notes,
some Phyllis Weikert dance materials, and the complete Mr. Everybody's
Apartment series for teaching younger children to read music. There is still
a bit left over which will be used for more software and/or more elementary
instruments.
Needless to say none of this would be possible without $10,000 from Oscar
Mayer. My district is in lay-off status and has lost nine teachers. The
elementary music program lost the choir (no extra duty contracts) but is intact
otherwise. Hopefully, this windfall of money and equipment will cause
the district to consider music programs more deeply before making additional
cuts.
